catching up

gill recently sent me a message via brian, pointing out that my blog hadn't been updated for far too long and she (and no doubt other devoted readers)  were getting bored silly by looking at picture of me with a pair of rubber gloves (see last post) that i am never going to grow into!

so, rather belatedly, here's a couple of photos of me on my annual outing to the races at ascot (brian was, at the time, having a fall in a nearby garden that took him back into hospital – more rubber gloves!) and, after indulging in the sport of kings (and loosing david a few pounds of – he says – hard-earned cash!) being happily reunited with my dear (dare I say intimate?) friend, hippolyta (aka 'the diva of fernbank road'), and having an opportunity to plan our upcoming island-getaway-holiday...

I bet you are already dreaming of romantic moonlit strolls along the sea shore.

if she goes, sharon... she was being a little enigmatic about her holiday arrangements, talking lightly about fond recollections of past holidays on the riviera...

all i can do is hope...

I understand she's a bit miffed you didn't meet her off the ferry in a stretch limo last year. She hasn't recovered from finding out the ferry doesn't have a VIP suite. A promise of a crate of the Artistico's finest Rhodian sweet "champagne" (ugh!) might mollify her.

I don't know what her plans are yet, but I'm sure you'll be thrilled to hear that I'm planning on being there again this year! I know how much you enjoyed my stories last year demonstrating the links between ancient Greek history and life up the Limpopo.

Also, we're all concerned about the link between Brian falling over and you going to the races. Should you not have stayed behind to keep an eye on him? At least if I'm in Emborios I can try to stop him from falling - or pick him up again if he does.

you're coming...? oh... that will be fun...

Yes - I'll be there! For some reason Hippolyta doesn't seem too keen on the idea, but I knew that you would be delighted.

See you in the bar, coz!!

one thing you simply must do if–– i mean when you come to kalymnos, is take a boat trip to leros... i'll get you a ticket...

Mmm ...

you'd be mad not to...

I presume you intend to buy a one-way ticket for your cousin, Buttons.

Actually, SharonM, Buttons is teasing me.

Leros is home to the largest psychiatric hospital in Greece and had a poor reputation for years. During the time when The Colonels were in power, political prisoners would be shipped there and forgotten. I could give you full details, but am saving them for my autumn illustrataed lecture series: "Greece: its islands, people and history with particular reference to fascinating links with life up the Limpopo in the 1930s."

I'm planning on sharing some of my insights with Buttons while we're on holiday and I know this little banter is covering up his enthusiasm and excitement at the prospect.

just wondering if perhaps i oughtn't to stay in london in case any important business matters come up for brian that need attention...

or if hippolyta's really decided that she's not going to greece, maybe i could hop down to ascot... oh, the dilemma of it all...
